The October issue of The Centretown BUZZ is out! We hope you’ll enjoy reading it.

It’s transit time this issue. Our front-page story interviews residents about the effect of the light rail shutdown (26 days and counting) – not only on cross-town commuting, but also on local routes which have lost trips and are operating using smaller buses. Councillor Catherine McKenney also makes her case for a full public inquiry into the LRT fiasco.

Robert Smythe gives the 60-year history of a site on Bell Street that’s now set for a new building; Stephen Thirlwall profiles local artist Stuart Kinmond; Ryan Lythall explains how road construction can imprison those who use wheelchairs; and Elise Kieffer explains the background of the new mural at Bank and Lisgar. Our community associations let us know about LeBreton Flats, community gardens, the urban forest, the online farmers market, the new Official Plan, the Centretown Fall Fair, and more. And the Community Garden Project on Bank Street explain what they’ve being doing with the bounteous harvests.

October 14 is the first day of debate on the new city Official Plan, and we have a quick guide to some of the remaining issues under debate, plus online interviews with Federation of Citizens Associations President Alex Cullen and urban planner Carolyn Whitzman.

We remember Barbara Arnold, who kept a loving eye on Bank Street’s people and dogs for many years.

The new MP for Ottawa Centre, Yasir Naqvi, tells us how open people were to talking about issues as he canvassed door to door in last month’s election. And we follow up with him about his priorities and plans for his election promises. (The online version of this article includes one more question.)

We have more ideas on what to see this month (the online story list has more). And we say goodbye to our long-time recipes columnist, Pearl Pirie, who ends her run with one last amuse-bouche.

Read this month’s newspaper online here, or as a flipbook. We also have a high-res version for printing your own copy.

Got a favourite dish?

What’s your favourite dish at a Centretown restaurant?

The BUZZ is inviting readers to let us know about the successes of our local restaurants – about the food they make that you really enjoy.

Tell us about one dish that makes you want to return to a restaurant – and what makes it special. Is it the combination of flavours? Or the culturally authentic recipe? Or the interesting ingredients? Or the special preparation technique that you wouldn’t even try at home? Or how you eat it?

Then we’ll talk to the restaurant and get their background on that dish for a story. Take-out or dine-in dishes are both good. It doesn’t have to be haut cuisine. We’d prefer local restaurants rather than international chains.

Yes, we know it’s hard to pick just one dish – but we’d really like to get your choices and learn what makes them special. Please send your nominations to editor@centretownbuzz.ca.
