In this issue

We’ve emphasized the positive and the hopeful in this issue – and even included some suggestions from local stores about local and Canadian authors and musicians whose recent releases you might want to pick up for gifts or for yourself.

There’s a huge animal-loving community in Centretown. They came together last month when 18 cats and one dog were orphaned after a tragic death. Learn how Marna Nightingale and Lorayne Katz found, fed, took care of, and are finding new homes for the animals.

Phil Jenkins has just released a third edition of his award-winning book, An Acre of Time, and brought it up to date. Read about his reasonably hopeful prognosis for LeBreton Flats.

We introduce a new cartoonist, Karen Munro-Caple, and her cartoons about the lighter side of the pandemic.

It’s a different partnership: a local brewery, a local hot sauce maker, and grapefruits. Reporter Marian El-Behiry explains how their work is benefiting the Dalhousie Food Cupboard, and could benefit your taste buds, too.

Jack Hanna looks back at the spectacular success of the Queen Elizabeth Driveway closure this spring/summer/fall and explains why it’s time to make that permanent. And John Kearney calls for more ploughed space to walk in Minto Park.

Nili Kaplan-Myrth revisits the good work that has been done to create outdoor-learning spaces for students at Glashan Public School, and calls for finishing the job.

Columnist Ryan Lythall celebrates the invaluable work done by personal support workers and argues it needs to be recognized and properly paid.

The Ottawa Tool Library is bouncing back after getting a last-minute eviction notice (and, yes, they’d been paying their rent) and tells us how their volunteers have rallied together, both in packing up temporarily and in looking for new space.

Councillor McKenney explains some of the important changes in the recently-released draft of the city’s new Official Plan. And school trustee Justine Bell talks about her and other families’ school experiences this fall.

Clinton Desveaux argues that Ottawa needs another LRT tunnel – in Centretown.

We give you ideas for what to see, in person where possible and on-line, this month.

And we have Pearl Pirie’s bright and light recipes for dark days, and more…
