Renter in the Centre: How much is too much? (What’s in a neighbourhood, part two)

by Jared Denison

In last month’s column, I gave you the average rent costs in Ottawa, and talked about some of the many great amenities we have in our neighbourhood.

This month, I wanted to show you the actual price of rentals right now for the different areas of Centretown such as Centretown West, and mid-Centretown.

This will give current Centretown residents, and anyone thinking of moving here in the next few months, an idea of what they can expect to pay and what amenities they can expect to find in the area that the apartment is located.

In mid-Centretown, there are the Kenson Towers located at 235 Somerset Street West. Currently, there are 11 vacancies ranging in price from $950 for a bachelor to $1,550 for a newly renovated one-bedroom apartment.

All of these apartments have various dates of availability. To get more information, check out the property management’s website at www.taggart.ca.

Heading east towards the Rideau Canal, you can rent an unfurnished three-bedroom in a heritage building, located at 405 Elgin Street for $1,095. More information can be found at www saickleyapartments.com.

Heading south, you can rent either a one-bedroom for $1,099, or a two-bedroom for $1,325, at The Edwardian, located at 360 Frank Street. District Realty manages the building and they have more rentals and information at www.districtrealty.com.

These apartments are walking distance to two major grocery stores, and many bars, and restaurants throughout Centretown.

They are also close to many coffee shops and the Main Library branch, as well as the Museum of Nature, and multiple parks and recreation centres.

Anything west of Kent Street falls under the area of Centretown West. Currently, the Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation has a two-bedroom available November 1 for $1,090 at 140 Bronson Avenue. Get the details on this and other rentals at www.ccochousing.org/index.php/rentals.

Fleming Property Management has a bachelor for rent October 1. It is located at 729 Cooper Street and is going for $875. More information can be found at www.fpm.ca/centretown.

If you choose to rent in Centretown West, depending on where you live, you unfortunately do not have access to a major grocery store at your doorstep. However, you are just minutes away from Bank Street Independent and Sobeys, located right in the heart of mid-Centretown.

You also have many schools, parks, and recreation centres within minutes’ walking distance of your apartment.

As you can see, renting in Centretown is not cheap.

But some deals can be found if you look all over and you are willing to budge a little on your price point.

Not to mention the walkability factor and close proximity makes living in our neighbourhood worth every penny.
